Insurmountable

"Wait," he begged. "Please, I'll do anything. You know I will."

The water swirled around her feet as she began to turn away. "I'm sorry, I... I never meant for this to happen."

"Please... " He moved toward her, the tips of his hooves barely touching the water. Steam and ash rose from where they met.

She jumped back, trying not to look at him, to see him. She couldn't let him do this. "No. You know better. Please, don't be so rash... you know... you know very well, that one touch from me, and it will be your death." Her voice cracked.

"I don't care."

"I do. And I won't let you hurt yourself any longer. You will be better off with someone... someone... w-who can make you happy." With that, she turned and ran, refusing to allow him to see the tears that had begun to stream down her face. Behind her, he paced frantically along the shoreline, his own impossible tears--his first ever and only--leaving open scars down his face.

"No, no...!"

She continued, without looking back, knowing if she did even once more, she might give in to his pleas. "I love you, my Fire."

So, this is an entry for 's contest "Two Worlds, One Love."

I decided to take the requirements a bit further.
The stallion here is a Fire unicorn. He obviously comes from a completely different world from her--so different, in fact, that they cannot even touch each other. Just as Water douses Fire when they come into contact, so his life would be extinguished from contact with her. The barrier is insurmountable, and so she left him, praying he could find someone who could help him forget what they had.

I had loads of fun doing this! I am, again, trying a slightly different style. I hope you all like it!!!
